The Medina Railroad Museum occupies one of the finest surviving small-city railroad depots in New York State — the former New York Central passenger station at 530 West Avenue in Medina, a handsome Beaux-Arts structure built in 1905 at the height of American rail travel. Medina, located on the Erie Canal in Orleans County, was a prosperous agricultural and quarrying center whose economic life was organized around both the canal and the railroad corridor that paralleled it.
The New York Central Railroad was one of the most powerful transportation companies in American history, and its station buildings across upstate New York reflected the railroad's pride and its desire to present a dignified image to the communities it served. The Medina station, while modest compared to the great urban terminals, is a polished example of the Beaux-Arts depot type: a symmetrical buff brick structure with limestone trim, round-arched windows, a prominent hip roof with broad eaves, and a porte-cochère that once sheltered arriving passengers.
The interior retains much of its original character: high ceilings, tile floors, original woodwork in the waiting room, and the agent's bay window overlooking the tracks. For decades after rail passenger service declined, the building sat unused and deteriorating before local preservationists rallied to save it.
Today the building operates as the Medina Railroad Museum, housing an extensive collection of model trains, railroading memorabilia, and historical exhibits covering the New York Central, the Erie Canal, and the history of transportation in Orleans County. A restored New York Central passenger car on the adjacent tracks offers visitors an immersive glimpse of railroad travel in its golden age.
